Production Diary

Day One: 31/03/2022 Today I filmed the college classroom scene- where the contributors were completing work on their computers to show how they use technology. For this scene I used a Canon camera and a tripod to ensure that the shots were steady and not too shaky. I filmed multiple takes of this scene so that when I need to I can look through the different shots and choose the best shot to include in the documentary later on. I also filmed some behind the scenes footage of the actors talking amongst themselves to show the progress of the scene- alongside some still images of the scene. Today I also attempted to film one of the interview scenes but unfortunately we ran out of time and battery on the camera. I managed to film a small portion of this interview scene using another Canon camera, a tripod and a small boom microphone that could be attached to the top of the camera. Seeing as I was not able to finish filming this scene I aim to complete the filming of it tomorrow- using...

Pre-Production: Logistic Aspects (Risk Assessments)

After completing the rest of the paperwork I filled out risk assessment forms for each location. For these forms I had to decide what risks we would encounter filming in this location and what measures would have to be taken in order to avoid these risks. I had to fill out one of these forms for every location where I would be filming- as the risks may not have been the same in each location.

Pre-Production: Logistic Aspects (Contributor Release, Personnel List, Resource List, Shooting Schedule)

Image
After completing location scouting and release forms I filled out a personnel list. I filled this out so that I knew who would be (or would hopefully be) in my product and also a form of contact so that I would be able to contact them throughout the production if I needed to. After completing the personnel list I completed contributor release forms. These are required to ensure that I have the actors permission to film them and use the footage in the final product- as without their permission I would not be able to have them be in the documentary and would have had to find someone else- or shorten the documentary to exclude their scenes. I also had to complete a resource list. This was so I knew what resources and equipment I would need to film the documentary. I also needed to state where I would get these resources from and if I had obtained them yet- which in some cases I will be obtaining them on the day of filming. To ensure that I and the crew would know when I planned to ...

Pre-Production: Logistic Aspects (Location Scouting, Location Release)

To ensure that I had suitable locations to film- I filled out location scouting forms. I researched the best locations for my ideas for this documentary- and took into consideration the pros and cons. After further research of these locations I chose the specific locations for the scenes. After filling out the location scouting sheets, I had to fill out location release forms. I did this so that I knew if I had permission from the property owners of the locations to film there and use the footage in my final product.

Pre-Production: Creative aspects (Storyboard, Script)

For this campaign, thought I am filming a documentary- I drew out a brief storyboard of how I want the scenes to go. I included camera angles and camera movement, including the movement of the actors. I also had to create a script for the documentary- even though I would not be scripting the dialogue as the interviewees would be talking about their own experiences and not have their words fully scripted. I included shot types and camera placement in the script- and also the scenes- including the actions for the footage of the interviewees using technology.

Rationale and Feedback

Image
For this campaign- I created a rationale to describe my ideas for my documentary. I included some research that I conducted on the client, the campaign and the target audience for this campaign- which I followed with my ideas- hoping to visualize to a small focus group what my aims were for the product I will be making. I then delivered the pitch to a small focus group- where I explained my ideas in a greater depth than I had written on the rationale presentation. After I had presented my rationale to a focus group, I created a google form to obtain some feedback about my ideas. When I asked the focus group if they understood who the client and the target audience were. This meant that the target audience understood that the documentary was going to be aimed at them- and they understood that I was making the documentary for the BBC as a whole. Also, when I asked if the focus group if they understood my ideas for the documentary- the majority stated that they did. This meant that...

Audience Research

Image
For this campaign I conducted audience research so that I was certain on who my target audience for this documentary was. This was important as I needed to know who I was making this documentary for- the client- but also who would be watching it- as if the target audience was 26 and above- it would be pointless to create a documentary for an audience under the age of 26. To conduct this research I created a Google Form and sent it out to the people in my class and the members of a group I take part in- and I collated that research into an audience profile- so that it was easier to read the statistics and facts. Once I had collected this research- I collated the information into an audience profile.

Existing Product Research

I conducted research into existing products- so that I could understand certain methods that current filmmakers use in their documentaries. I did this so that I could perhaps use some of these techniques in my own documentary so that it is successful.

Research Into the Documentary Film Format

I had to research documentary formats and documentary theory for this campaign- since we are producing our own documentary it is vital that we know what format we could film in- and also the theories that back different types of documentary. I put all of this information into a Microsoft Sway- as with this I can make the information look better visually.

Research Into the Client (BBC)

For this campaign I had to conduct research into the client and the campaign. We were told to make this research visually engaging rather than just writing out big blocks of text- which get quite boring to read. To do this I used Microsoft Sway.  I had to include research on the BBC as a whole first, but then I delved deeper into the BBC Three channel- as this is the channel we are creating the documentary for- as it is more focused on target audiences between the ages of 16-24- which fits with us as the producers of our own documentaries

Innovative Technology Research

Different Equipment Phones Over the years of technological advancements- many new ways of filming have been created. We can use our phones to film regular footage- alongside slow motion footage and time lapses. Many present day cameras are unable to film this type of footage without the aid of editing software. Phones were a recent development- especially phones with cameras that could film slow-motion and time lapses. Recently- with newer phones- time lapses and slow motion videos are higher quality- rather than older phones with not much technological capabilities. Many phones now have these capabilities- which makes filming footage easier even if you do not have a camera. Phones recently are much more able to be used as devices to capture footage. Pros and Cons: With phone cameras- there are a lot of things you can accomplish- such as slow motion and time lapse. Some phones have the ability to zoom in quite close to far away objects- and also allow you to change the brightness a...
